Newfoundland & Labrador - friendly people and outstanding scenery

The first Europeans visited Newfoundland in 998AD when the Vikings landed and set up a permanent settlement. European history has been closely woven with the development of Newfoundland tracing back to John Cabot. In more recent years the fishing industry has provided Europe with a seemingly endless supply of fish. Today Newfoundland moves forward with its new oil wealth, friendly people, outstanding scenery and options to live and experience the great outdoors.

Why choose Newfoundland & Labrador?

Newfoundland is less than a five hour flight from the UK and there are regular flights to the capital, St John’s, and the western town of Deer Lake, via Halifax or St John’s. Over a thousand years ago the Vikings found Newfoundland on one of their great exploratory trips, setting up a permanent outpost at L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Incorporate Alberta with British Columbia and there are some fantastic rail journeys to enjoy: Rocky Mountaineer offers three separate options through the Rockies and Via Rail Canada, the national railway system of Canada, offers two separate journeys, each has their benefits and our staff will be pleased to advise you which fits most appropriately into your proposed trip.

Most people think that Newfoundland is quite small, but in fact it is quite large. We highly recommend that it is always thought of as a separate holiday to any other area of Canada as there is so much to do. If you like coastline and maritime experiences, including whale watching and iceberg viewing, then you have found your ideal destination. Being an island separated from the rest of Canada the culture is somewhat unique. Nothing is done in a hurry, people seem to have time to stand and talk to visitors, share their experiences, their history and philosophy.

The area in and around St John’s, North America’s oldest city, offers a mixture of history and wildlife viewing that many will say is unsurpassed in Canada. The journey across the south of the island offers stunning scenery whilst Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers experiences to delight the most seasoned traveller. In the north, Quirpon Island is a unique experience and the journey to and from contributes to the whole. Add to this the Viking culture in the north, and the recreational activities in the stunning Humber Valley area and you have an overall package that will exceed your expectations.

Labrador is just beginning to open up to tourism. The Torngat Mountains National Park, newly formed in 2005, offers not only the wildlife you would expect in this area, but also the opportunity to view polar bears. Access is limited, but we are working with some cruise options, a fly drive and a bus tour option to facilitate the opportunity to visit this developing area.
